We were particularly impressed by the effectiveness of its row-cleaning pattern — it thoroughly picked up fur and debris even if it blew or knocked them to the sides on an initial passthrough.

For mopping robots with reusable pads, it's important to occasionally remove and launder the mopping pads and allow them to dry before re-installing them on the robot. If your robot's charging base doesn't automatically wash and dry the pads between cleanings, you should remove them after every session.

There are newer features and models that were created to avoid this, some now come with mapping tape so you can square off areas you want them to clean, others feature detailed floor-scanning, which will detect cables and areas to avoid.

Its size means that it can reach most spaces with ease, plus its sensors work very well and ensure that it doesn't learn its way around just by bumping into furniture.

Eufy X10 Pro Omni is the best robot vacuum for most people. This self-empty robot vacuum and mop checks pretty much all our boxes. The suction power is excellent, pulling all kinds of debris, fluff and hair and fluff out of our tester's carpet (although it did flick larger debris about rather than sucking it up – a problem with almost all robovacs). It's relatively quiet in all but it's very highest vacuum setting, too.

It's good at avoiding objects, reliably dodging pets and other discarded objects, and only really struggling with cables (which pelo robovac we've tested has been able to reliably avoid).

Not all robovacs can handle the extra challenge posed by lots of pet hair, but one that really impressed on this front was the Dreame L40 Ultra. This bot was put through its paces in a home filled with furry, four-legged friends, and really rose to the occasion.

At an overall cleaning score of 95 percent, this robot vacuum deep-cleans hard floors and carpet. We found that its side brush was really effective in sweeping debris forward and into the vacuum's bin.
